The Petersen Automotive Museum offers a free Automotive Design courseBetween the growing number of automakers requiring more distinctive designs to stand out from the herd and electric cars requiring entirely new design approaches, there has perhaps been more of an overall focus on vehicle design in the past decade than there has been since the 1960s. The interest will become clearer as more automakers get in the game and electric vehicle makers work to prevent their wares from becoming partially autonomous devices. Step into Petersen Automotive Museum and online education developer Yellowbrick, who have teamed up to offer a free Automotive Design and Drawing course.
Petersen needs no introduction. Yellowbrick creates online programs about industry leaders who provide real-world knowledge to course takers. Guest professors for this automotive design course include Hispano Design Director Suiza Francesc Arenas, Stellantis Design Director Ralph Giles, Tesla lead designer Franz von Holzhausen, Chief Designer Nio Colin Phipps, Chrysler Brand CEO Christine Fewell, and faculty at the College of Art Center of Design Roman Yenigis among others. Auto Design & Sketching is divided into three modules, each of which is divided into a number of lessons that run from about 90 seconds to six minutes. The first two modules focus on understanding what happened in vehicles of the past, but all modules make sure to connect to the world of moving vehicles today from sketch through to production. The first unit is “Design Principles and History,” 17 videos that start with “From the wheel to the car,” making sure to ask the question, “What makes a great designer?” It ends with "engineering and final manufacturing". This builds on Petersen's vast inside knowledge, and as museum representatives explain the evolution of the automobile, many of the topics that guided the industry 100 years ago can be turned into a word-for-word discussion of the automobile industry today. In the next module, "Celebrity Case Studies," today's design directors delve into four icons: the DeLorean DMC-12, the Lamborghini Gallardo, the retro incarnation of the 2005 Ford Shelby Mustang, and the Tesla Model S. "Let's Draw," which deals with exercises Such as perspective drawing under the guidance of Professor Yenigs. You only need to be over 13 and have an email address to sign up for free help. The first two modules are now running, the third starting in January, and the course will run until December 17, 2023. |
